I am a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and board certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. My counseling practice is informed by a variety of experiences and perspectives. I have extensive experience in public health education, specifically in the emotional and psychological effects of sexually transmitted infections. As a former director of the Centers for Disease Control's National STD Hotline, I advocated for sexual health concerns and women's health issues to the public and the media.
During an extended counseling internship, I had the privilege of working with Vietnam War veterans, focusing on posttraumatic stress issues. Working with these brave men and women as they battled their psychological wounds and reclaimed their wholeness, I witnessed the genuine healing power of therapy, which inspires me every day in my work as a counselor.
Much of my counseling approach is shaped by the work of Carl Jung, so I am inclined to engage with my clients spiritually and creatively, appreciating the beauty and mystery of life as I help my clients understand themselves and their lives. As Jungian therapist James Hollis writes, "Perhaps Jung's most compelling contribution is the idea of individuation, that is, the lifelong project of becoming more nearly the whole person we were meant to be.... While revering the mystery of others, our individuation summons each of us to stand in the presence of our own mystery, and become more fully responsible for who we are in this journey we call our life." These words express the soul of my work as a counselor.
I provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal challenges and to explore new perspectives and options. Using empathy and humor, I tailor my approach to match the needs and sensibility of each client to enhance their strengths and personal development.
